Ukraine’s STING Interceptor Drone: The $2,000 Shahed Killer

The STING interceptor drone is reportedly a largely 3D printed platform capable of reaching speeds around 213 miles per hour with an operational ceiling near 10,000 feet. Designed as an inexpensive counter to the Shahed-136, the interceptor is estimated to cost around $2,000 per unit, dramatically cheaper than the $35,000 to $50,000 long range drones it is meant to destroy.

Equipped with four electric rotors and the Kurbas thermal imaging camera developed by Odd Systems, the drone is optimized for nighttime detection and interception. Footage first released by the Wild Hornets in May 2025 showed some of the earliest interceptions, and by August the imaging system developers reported dozens of confirmed Shahed kills.

Just months after the first footage appeared, the group claimed that STING interceptor drones had destroyed more than 1,000 targets, highlighting the rapid scaling of Ukraine’s drone based air defense. By December 2025, estimates from the developers suggested that roughly 3,000 Shahed drones had been intercepted using this system.

With an estimated accuracy rate of around 70 percent, multiple interceptor drones are often launched against a single target, similar in concept to layered missile defenses such as the MIM-104 Patriot, though adapted to counter a completely different class of aerial threat.

As drone warfare continues to evolve, inexpensive interceptor systems like the STING may offer important lessons for future air defense strategies. Mass produced drones designed specifically to hunt other drones could become a key element of modern battlefield air defense.
