This will be our last video on the neuro anatomy of the central nervous system! Today, we will discuss the anatomy, blood supply, and pathology of the brainstem. The brainstem helps link many of our previous topics together, including the spinal cord, the cerebellum, and the cranial nerves.
We will go over some general anatomy of the brainstem, including talking about where the cranial nerves lie, the pineal gland, and the superior and inferior colliculi.
Now we will look at the blood supply of the brainstem, including the Circle of Willis, the basilar artery, anterior spinal artery, posterior inferior cerebellar artery, and anterior inferior cerebellar artery.
By understanding the blood supply of the artery, we can understand if we have a brain stem stroke. These culminate into:
Lateral Pontine Syndrome
Lateral Medullary Syndrome
Medial Medullary Syndrome
Basilar Artery Stroke (Locked In Syndrome)
Done with the CNS. Next few videos will be on the neuroanatomy of the peripheral nervous system!
