Anthony Eleonora Christensen, commonly known as Antonor Christensen, née Cherning (July 5, 1849 – September 27, 1926), was a Danish flower painter.
Anthony Eleonora Cherning was born on July 5, 1849 in Copenhagen. She was the daughter of army officer and politician Anton Frederik Cherning (1795–1874) and painter Eleonora Cherning (1817–1890). Her sister Sarah Ulrik (1855–1916) was also a flower painter.
Christensen was initially taught to paint by the flower painter Emma Thomsen, and then by her mother, with whom she went on a study trip to Germany, Italy and Paris in 1869. She began exhibiting in 1867 under her maiden name and immediately attracted attention: already in 1868, the Royal Museum of Painting in Copenhagen acquired one of her paintings.
In 1871, Anthony Eleonora married the classical philologist Richard Christensen (1843–1876). After the wedding, she and her husband spent two years in Italy. Their marriage lasted only five years; unfortunately, her husband died.
From 1874, Anthony Eleonora began exhibiting under the name Christensen and gained recognition for her paintings of wildflowers in their natural environment, rather than in artificially arranged bouquets, as was fashionable at the time.
Upon her return, she showed more mature works inspired by the flora of the south. In 1887, she was awarded the Neuhausen Prize for "Et Kurvelaag med afskaarne Roser" ("A Flower Basket with Cut Roses"). Antonia Eleonora Christensen exhibited her works from 1867 at Charlottenborg, winning the medal of the year in 1893.
As a painting teacher, her students included Queen Louise and Queen Olga of Greece.
When Princess Dagmar married Russian Tsar Alexander III, one of Antonora Christensen's paintings was sent to Russia as a wedding gift.
