Brooklyn Park residents will soon have its first all-inclusive park providing amenities for people with disabilities. Crews put the finishing touches on the playground Thursday. City officials say every child should be able to know what it feels like to go down a slide or climb up a rope.
"This playground you're able to wheel up to every feature, on the playground, and transfer yourself, and utilize each play feature." said Brooklyn Park Recreation and Parks Director Jon Oyanagi.
The 7,300-square foot park comes with a lot of unique features, including artificial turf, which no other park in the city has.
"It's a padded, cushioned artificial turf surface. If somebody fell, they'd be less likely to get hurt," Oyanagi said.
There are also plenty of ramps that make it easy for people in wheelchairs to access the park. The park is also not only for children, but parents can get in on play time.
"Maybe the parents in a wheelchair and they can follow their kid and play with their kid on the playground," said Oyanagi.
The park cost about $350,000. The city was able to save $50,000 on the cost by using a grant and other discounts. A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for Oct. 16.
