10 Demons Named in Ancient Religious Texts
You are the high priest of Israel. The year is fourteen forty-six BCE, or perhaps it's the sixth century BCE when this ritual was first written down. The timing doesn't matter. What matters is this: it is Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, and you stand between two identical goats. In your hand are lots, stones or wooden pieces, each marked with a name. One lot reads "for Yahweh." The other reads "for Azazel." You cast them. One goat will die on the altar, its blood spilled for God. The other will be driven into the wilderness of Judea, into that scorched expanse of limestone cliffs and dead valleys east of Jerusalem, for something else. Not for Yahweh. For Azazel. The Torah doesn't explain who or what Azazel is. It simply commands that this goat must go to him.
