Designed by Dornier, it was the only aircraft of its kind capable of vertical takeoff and landing using ten jet engines. Developed for NATO’s tactical transport needs, the Do 31 combined British Pegasus and Rolls-Royce lift engines, setting several world records for speed, altitude, and distance. Though the project ended in 1970, the Do 31 remains a symbol of bold Cold War innovation and aerospace ambition.
