The XPENG G6 is XPENG’S first car to hit the UK market, a coupe-EV SUV aimed to take on cars such as the Ford Capri, Volkswagen ID.5 & most importantly the Tesla Model Y, a car which it takes much of its design inspiration from.

XPENG is another Chinese manufacturer, joining the growing number joining the UK such as MG, BYD, OMODA/JAECOO, GWM, Chery & Deepal, with even more set to arrive. XPENG has 3 other models available in other regions which are also due to arrive here.

I was impressed to see the amount of standard features packed into the G6, with XPENG offering the same equipment on Standard & Long Range models. The streamlined approach will also help to keep the pricing competitive, with the Standard range starting at £39,990 & the Long Range at £44,990, of course the case with EVs is that over 80% of buyers are through fleet / leasing, so the monthly figures will be the important consideration.

Chinese cars tend to get a lot of the technology & especially the battery & motor setup right. The G6 is efficient & felt nippy too, it also got very close to its WLTP range figures. A heat pump is also standard, meaning winter range should be less effected, also, the long range features an NMC battery, meaning it is supposed to deal with colder climates better than LFP batteries, however LFP technology is meant to degrade at a slower rate.

This car has a lot of competition & I’d argue it is not from other Chinese models, but mostly from the VW Group MEB vehicles from the Skoda Enyaq to the Volkswagen ID.5 & the Ford Capri. There is definitely those who prefer a familiar brand & cars which we know perform well on European roads. As a package XPENG has managed to deliver a lot with the G6 & to those wanting a feature-packed EV it could make a lot of sense, however ergonomically & design wise, I find the before mentioned vehicles beat it.
