As we prepare to perform the cosmic music of Stockhausen's 'Sternklang', we asked BCMG musicians how it feels to be back in the rehearsal room, about their experience during lockdown and their favourite features of this epic piece.
For the first of the Sternklang Digital Diaries, we interviewed trombone player Tony Howe. In the second of two, Tony guides us through some of extended technique for trombone in the piece with a brief demonstration to close.
At the beguiling simple heart of 'Sternklang' is the harmonic series; throughout its 2.5 hour duration, Tony is required to coax various harmonic overtones from his instrument with the help of a harmon mute.
