MONSTER Barred Surfperch at Lands End! (San Francisco Surf Fishing)

On February 4, 2026, I went fishing for the first time at Lands End and Sutro Baths in San Francisco. I had scoped out the area the day before, and I was immediately excited by the potential this spot had to offer.
There was an abundance of perch in the area, including some big Barred Surfperch, as well as Rainbow and Walleye Surfperch. Several anglers I spoke with mentioned that during the summer, massive Striped Bass are often caught off the cliffs and along the beach. From the rocks, you can also target Kelp Greenling, Monkeyface Prickleback (commonly called Monkeyface Eel), Rockfish—including Cabezon—and even Lingcod.
The surf was strong the day I fished, which made things challenging. During high tide, I had several nibbles but couldn’t quite land a fish. As the afternoon progressed and the tide shifted from high to low, I was able to walk onto the beach with my pasta strainer and scoop up a solid batch of sand crabs.
Once I switched to sand crabs for bait, the action picked up. After a few more bites—and one massive strike—I put on my water shoes and carefully waited until the surf and tide dropped to a safer level. Just a few casts later, using two large sand crabs, I finally hooked into a massive Barred Surfperch.
The fight was incredible, especially on a medium-heavy action rod. This turned out to be my biggest Barred Surfperch ever—over 13.5 inches and an estimated 2.5–3 pounds. I met a fellow angler named Jimmy and ended up giving him the fish to take home for dinner. (Hope it tasted great, Jimmy!)
