In the 2000s, the US government waged a decade-long war in Iraq. This came on the heels of the first Iraq War in 1990 and 1991. The rationale given for the invasion—weapons of mass destruction that were never found. A more plausible explanation for war was Saddam Hussein’s insistence on dumping the US dollar. He referred to it as the “currency of the enemy” and in late 2000 began selling Iraqi oil in euros.
