An old Soviet-made hand drill from my grandfather's legacy. Also known as an "amerikáner" or breast drill.
As a child, I used to play a lot in my grandfather's workshop, pretending to be an astronaut or a soldier with whatever I could find there. The workshop was dark and had a strange smell, filled with old things, making it a perfect place to play. There were so many things there that even my grandfather probably didn't know what some of them were used for.
The first electric drills appeared in 1889 for mining and construction work. These were stationary, so hand drills remained a mobile and inexpensive alternative until electric hand drills became available with the widespread use of electricity. With the advent of cordless drills, hand drills have become completely unnecessary.
