(11 May 2017) Iraqi federal police pushed deeper into western Mosul on Thursday, attempting to encircle Islamic State group (IS) militants in the city.
Separately, special forces engaged the militants at the edge of Yarmouk district near the western edge of the city, but their push was thwarted by car bombs.
Hundreds of civilians were seen fleeing the city, some pushing their possessions - and in some cases old and sick relatives - on carts.
In recent days, government forces have managed to fight their way into a number of new district in the northwest of the city.
The battle for Mosul in now in its seventh month.
