The Tyrol Panorama overlooking Innsbruck contains a large painting commemorating a battle in 1809 where Napoleon's allies the Bavarians were defeated by a Tirolese resistant Andreas Hofer (November 22, 1767 – February 20, 1810). Next to the panorama we find a park commemorating Austrian war dead but the centre piece is the statue of Andreas Hofer.
In 1809 became the leader of the Tyrolean Rebellion against the revolutionary Napoleonic invasion during the War of the Fifth Coalition. He was subsequently captured and executed.
Hofer is still today venerated as a folk hero, freedom fighter and Austrian patriot.
