The central and the most important piece in a Bharatanatyam performance is the Varnam. It consists of Jathis and Abhinaya alternatively. Today’s Varnam narrates the story of Lord Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva. He is the one who has Deivanai and Valli as consorts. He is referred to as the
‘karunai Kandha’- the compassionate one, Vetri VelAyudha - the one who with his spear has won over the demons, Devasenapathy- the army head of the Devas, kundril vazhum azhagu migu kandha-thehandsome one who resides in pazhani. The Nayika in thie varnam explains her state saying Kandanai Kaana Kan thedudhe¸en manam nilai kolladhu! The love - lorn nayika longs for her lord’s glance and explains that she cannot bear this separation from him.
