Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting on population welfare, emphasizing that achieving a sustainable balance between population growth and national resources is essential for Pakistan's long-term development and economic stability.

The Prime Minister observed that rapid population growth is placing increasing pressure on national resources and remains one of the country's most significant development challenges. He stressed the need to align population planning with national development, economic progress, and human capital enhancement.

To strengthen coordination at the national level, the Prime Minister directed that the inaugural meeting of the National Population Council be convened at the earliest and instructed the immediate finalization of its organizational framework. He announced that he will personally chair the Council.

The National Population Council will include the Chief Ministers of all four provinces, the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, and other key stakeholders to ensure a coordinated national approach.

During the meeting, participants received a detailed briefing on population trends and ongoing population welfare initiatives. It was highlighted that:

• Social protection programmes will be integrated with family planning initiatives.
• Women's education and economic empowerment will remain central pillars of the national population strategy.
• A comprehensive nationwide public awareness campaign on balanced population growth will be launched.
• Successful population management models from Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Iran were reviewed as useful examples.
• The National Population Council, working in close collaboration with provincial governments, will lead coordinated efforts across the country.
• The Secretariat of the National Population Council will be housed within the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives.

The meeting was attended by Chief of Army Staff & Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Minister for Defence Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for Finance Muhammad Aurangzeb, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani, along with senior government officials.
