A friend suggested I take a walk through this park that used to be a cemetery. There are grave markers hidden in the trees and even in plain sight. It hints to cemetery lovers and passers-by that this was once a pioneer burial ground.
Once called Old Trafalgar Street Cemetery, and later Copenhagen Mount, Fairfield Park in Nelson, Aotearoa New Zealand, was one of the area's first cemeteries. It opened in 1851 and was closed in 1910. At least 78 people are known to have been buried there, although many of the historic memorials are now gone. It's a beautiful example of how historic burial grounds are often transformed to suit modern needs. Well worth visiting for all you cemetery lovers.
