Entering the “Gateway to the Underworld” | Bull Rock, Ireland
In this adventure, I travel to Bull Rock, a dramatic sea stack rising nearly 90 meters above the Atlantic Ocean off the Beara Peninsula in West Cork.

Our journey begins at Garnish Pier and takes us across wild Atlantic waters to some of Ireland’s most remote and spectacular coastal landmarks including Dursey Island, Calf Rock, and Cow Rock with its incredible natural sea arch.
At the base of Bull Rock lies a natural sea tunnel, carved over centuries by powerful waves. Locals have long called it the “Gateway to the Underworld” a name inspired by Irish legend and the mysterious atmosphere of this place. While not a literal entrance to another realm, standing before it truly feels like stepping into the unknown.
Along the way, we explore:
• Ireland’s only cable-car island
• The remains of a 19th-century lighthouse
• A dramatic sea arch you can sail through
• The isolated lighthouse on Bull Rock
• The myths and legends connected to Ireland’s rugged coastline
This is a journey through wild nature, maritime history, and ancient storytelling, all captured through the lens of landscape photography.
