Puppy proofing is very important in keeping your dog safe. "Puppy proofing" means that you are making your space suitable for your dog to be out of danger. Cords, wires, shoes, and other types of things that may be chewed on are put up and out of the way. The world is brand new to your dog and you must keep them safe by protecting them.
How to Puppy Proof:
Get shoes off the ground so your dog doesn't chew them.
Get power cords off the ground that the dog would destroy.
Make sure that cabinets cannot be reached and all toxic chemicals and pesticides will be forever out of reach from your dog.
Remove all types of plants out of our pet's reach because certain types can be toxic.
Pick up blankets and other random items the dog may want to pee on or chew apart.
We want to teach the dog what is acceptable of them before setting the dog up for failure by leaving things out. This is setting our dog up for success. We want to teach the dog what we want them to do with as little room for failure as possible.
We want to also make sure our puppies are safe. Your dog may decide it wants to try to ingest things you leave out. If puppy eats a non-edible item and the item gets stuck then puppy may need surgery as a result. Surgery to remove the foreign object is very pricey. Make sure to always watch your puppy or new dog closely; even when they are in their crate.
Purchase outlet plug protectors for outlets. This will protect your dog and your home from serious electrical damages.
Next, especially for puppies, close off a space for your dog to be introduced to, such as a bathroom or kitchen. As time goes on and that trust is being gained introduce more rooms to the dog.
Eventually your dog should adapt to a life shared with you. It should know what is expected to be chewed on and what isn't. If your dog is chewing on something always correct them by taking it away and giving the dog the correct thing to chew on.
Most of the time destructive behavior is a result of lack of stimulation and supervision, so be sure to supply your dog with lots of things to do in a safe area such as a crate or a blocked off play area.
