The Semanggi Bridge, which is located at the intersection between Jalan Sudirman and Jalan Gatot Subroto, has a long history. Assisted by Soetami, the proud architect of Indonesia who at that time served as Minister of Public Works, the clover bridge project was started in 1961. At that time, the community's resistance was quite strong. Especially considering that the state's finances at that time were in "crisis". However, this did not slacken Sukarno's desire to build the Semanggi bridge.

The choice of the name "Semanggi Bridge" itself was not without consideration. According to what is written in the book 212 Origins of Djakarta Tempoe Doeloe by Zaenuddin HM, the area where the bridge was built was originally a swamp filled with clover trees.

Clover which in Latin is called Salviniales is a plant of the water fern group of the Marsileaceae species. This plant usually lives in swamps and rice fields. For the people of Surabaya, clover leaves are the main ingredient in traditional culinary pecel semanggi, which sellers used to find in residential complexes.

The cloverleaf in Sukarno's thought had a deep philosophical value. The arrangement of clover leaves is considered a symbol of national unity. The four parts of the leaf resemble the tribes in Indonesia, then put together into one unified whole leaf. The book also states that clover leaves are like “suh”, namely the binding of a broom stick. The sticks that are held together by the "suh" will be strong.

Now after decades since the project was started, the Semanggi bridge is not only able to relieve traffic jams at the intersection between the two main streets of the capital city, but also becomes a site and an original pride born from the thoughts of the nation's children.
