How Do You Restart a Country After a Blackout?

A power station needs electricity before it can make its own. After a major blackout, engineers use black start to build small working grids and bring the country back online, one connection at a time.
Follow the first power from a hydroelectric plant to a recovering town. See why appliances restarting together can overload a fragile power island, why voltage and frequency need separate attention, and why two live grids must be synchronised before they can join.
We also look at the restoration of mainland Spain and Portugal after the 28 April 2025 blackout, using ENTSO-E's final report, published on 20 March 2026. The film explores how power returns and how suitably equipped batteries and other resources could help with the restart.
