Taijasa: The Dreaming State (U)

00:06 Verse 1
oṃ ityetadakṣaramidaṃ sarvaṃ tasyopavyākhyānaṃ bhūtaṃ bhavadbhaviṣyaditi sarvamoṅkāra eva yaccānyattrikālātītaṃ tadapyoṅkāra eva
OM — this syllable is all this. Its explanation is this: what has been, what is, what will be — all this is truly OM. And whatever is other than this, beyond the three times — that too is truly OM.
00:28 Verse 2
sarvaṃ hyetad brahma ayam ātmā brahma so’yam ātmā catuṣpāt
All this indeed is Brahman. This Atman is Brahman. This Atman has four states.
00:36 Verse 3
jāgaritasthāno bahiṣprajñaḥ saptāṅga ekonaviṃśatimukhaḥ sthūlabhug vaiśvānaraḥ prathamaḥ pādaḥ
That whose place is the waking state, outwardly cognizing, having seven limbs and nineteen mouths, enjoying the gross — is Vaiśvānara. This is the first state.
00:48 Verse 4
svapnasthāno’ntaḥprajñaḥ saptāṅga ekonaviṃśatimukhaḥ praviviktabhuk taijaso dvitīyaḥ pādaḥ
That whose place is the dream state, inwardly cognizing, having seven limbs and nineteen mouths, enjoying the differentiated, the subtle — is Taijasa. This is the second state.
01:03 Verse 5
yatra supto na kaṃcana kāmaṃ kāmayate na kaṃcana svapnaṃ paśyati tats uṣuptam | suṣuptasthāna ekībhūtaḥ prajñānaghana eva ānandamayaḥ hyānandabhuk cetomukhaḥ prājñaḥ tṛtīyaḥ pādaḥ
Where one asleep desires no desire and sees no dream — that is deep sleep. That whose place is deep sleep, become one, undifferentiated, a mass of consciousness alone, made of bliss, enjoyer of bliss, whose mouth is consciousness — is Prājña. This is the third state.
01:27 Verse 6
eṣa sarveśvaraḥ eṣa sarvajñaḥ eṣo’ntaryāmī eṣa yoniḥ sarvasya prabhavāpyayau hi bhūtānām
This is the Lord of all. This is the knower of all. This is the inner controller. This is the source of all. This is indeed the origin and dissolution of beings.
01:38 Verse 7
nāntaḥprajñaṃ na bahiṣprajñaṃ nobhayataḥprajñaṃ na prajñānaghanaṃ na prajñaṃ nāprajñam | adṛṣṭam avyavahāryam agrāhyam alakṣaṇam acintyam avyapadeśyam ekātmapratyayasāram prapañcopaśamam śāntam śivam advaitam | caturthaṃ manyante sa ātmā sa vijñeyaḥ
Not inwardly cognizing, not outwardly cognizing, not cognizing both, not a mass of consciousness, not cognition, not non-cognition. Unseen, not applicable to dealings, ungraspable, without marks, unthinkable, indescribable, whose essence is the awareness of the one Atman, the cessation of manifestation, peaceful, auspicious, non-dual. This is considered the Fourth. This is the Atman. This is to be known.
02:10 Verse 8
so’yam ātmādhyakṣaram oṅkāro’dhimātram pādā mātrā mātrāś ca pādā akāra ukāro makāra iti
That same Atman, viewed as syllable, is OM. The states are the measures, and the measures are the states. A, U, M — thus.
02:23 Verse 9
jāgaritasthāno vaiśvānaro’kāraḥ prathamā mātrā āpter ādimattvāt āpnoti ha vai sarvān kāmān ādiś ca bhavati ya evaṃ veda
Vaiśvānara, whose place is the waking state, is the letter A, the first measure, because of attainment and because of being first. He who knows thus attains all desires and becomes the first.
02:40 Verse 10
svapnasthānas taijasa ukāraḥ dvitīyā mātrā utkarṣād ubhayatvāt utkarṣati ha vai jñānasaṃtatim samānaś ca bhavati nāsyā brahmavit kule bhavati ya evaṃ veda
Taijasa, whose place is the dream state, is the letter U, the second measure, because of elevation and because of being between the two. He who knows thus raises the continuity of knowledge, becomes equal, and in his lineage there is no one who is not a knower of Brahman.
03:03 Verse 11
suṣuptasthānaḥ prājño makāraḥ tṛtīyā mātrā miter apīter vā minoti ha vā idaṃ sarvam apītiś ca bhavati ya evaṃ veda
Prājña, whose place is deep sleep, is the letter M, the third measure, because of measuring or because of absorption. He who knows thus measures all this and becomes its absorption.
03:20 Verse 12
amātraś caturthaḥ avyavahāryaḥ prapañcopaśamaḥ śivaḥ advaitaḥ | evam oṅkāraḥ ātmā eva | saṃviśati ātmanā ātmānam ya evaṃ veda ya evaṃ veda
The measureless is the Fourth, not applicable to dealings, the cessation of manifestation, auspicious, non-dual. Thus OM is the Atman indeed. He who knows thus enters the Self by the Self. He who knows thus.
