Mortality refers to death. Statistics on cause of death are important. The epidemiologist used this measurement for a number of purposes like in explaining trends in mortality and for planning health care program and indicating priorities for allocating resources in public health problems
Commonly used measures of death rate are
1. Crude Death Rate
2. Specific Death Rate
3. Case Fatality Rate
4. Proportional mortality Rate
5. Survival Rate
Mortality rate can be crude death rate and specific death rate. The crude death rate is also called as general mortality rate. In this the numerator include all the deaths occurring in a defined geographical area in a particular year and the denominator includes the total population in the same area of the year.
1. Crude death rate: CDR is the total number of deaths in one year in an area per 1000 estimated midyear population in that area. It is a simplest way of measurement of mortality rate. Limitation of this measurement is that lack comparability for communities’ population that differ by age, sex, race etc.
Formula CDR= No of death in one year/midyear population x 1000
2. Specific death rate : The specific mortality rate is calculated to see deaths occurring due to a particular disease, among particular age group, sex specific or income group and disease specific. Useful when planning to find out etiology but limitation is data often not available. Formula
SDR=Number of death due to specific cause/Midyear population x 1000
3. Case Fatality Rate: Case fatality is closely related to virulence.it is the killing power of certain disease. It is a ratio of death to cases. It is useful in acute infectious diseases but the limitation is no consideration of time.
CFR = No. of death due to a particular diseases in an year/Total no. of cases of that same diseases X 100
4. Proportional Mortality rate: Proportional mortality rate is the proportion or percentage of deaths due to particular cause out of all deaths. Its measures the disease burden in the community. It is expressed as PMR
PMR = No. of deaths due to a particular cause in an year/total no. of deaths from all causes in that year x 100
5. Survival Rate: Survival rate is the percentage of patients who remain alive at the end of 5 years after the date of diagnosis or start of treatment. It is usually used in cancer studies. It is expressed as SR = Total no. of patients alive after 5years of observation/Total no. of patients diagnosed or treated x 100
