The last decade and a half has seen a marked improvement in India-US defence and strategic ties. The relationship between the two countries has evolved from a simple buyer-seller defence relationship to that of joint research, co-development and production of high-end defence equipment and expanded strategic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. The recognition of India as a Major Defence Partner is of significant importance in furthering the defence relationship between the two countries.
This partnership label reflects not just the increasingly significant role India plays in regional and global security, but also the overall importance that the U.S. places on its strategic bilateral relationship with India. Defence cooperation between India and United States holds strategic priority juxtaposed with increasing Industry-to-Industry engagement between the two countries. Today, the relationship encompasses a broad spectrum of activities from intelligence sharing to joint humanitarian and relief efforts, mutual port visits by naval ships, joint exercises, trade in military hardware and, most importantly, co-production and co-development of military systems.
At the sidelines of the 3rd edition 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue between India and the US scheduled on 26-27 October, SIDM is organizing a panel discussion on India-US Defence Cooperation on 26th October from 1830-1930 hrs on its virtual platform.
