Each sound is taught with:
A sound (e.g., /y/ for ‘y’)
An action or gesture to help memorise it
Letter formation (writing the letter(s))
Blending and segmenting words using that sound
Vocabulary words that use that sound
For example:
/y/ sound: words like “yes”, “yellow”
/x/ sound: often /ks/ as in “box”, “six”
/ch/: as in “chop”, “church”
/sh/: as in “sheep”, “shop”
/th/: two versions often taught — the /θ/ in “thin” and the /ð/ in “this”
Once the sounds are learned, children move to blending them into words (reading) and segmenting them out (spelling) — key literacy skills.
