High resolution macro photos and short video clips reveal the 5-week progression of development of Petitella bleheri, the rummy nose tetra (eggs, embryos, larvae, absorption of yolk sacs, free swimming, eating paramecium and bbs, evolution of fins, schooling behavior and finally achieving the juvenile stage).
A group of adults were placed in a 20gal tank with RO water and peat moss in a bag behind the matten filter. The fish spawn at night between 1am and 5am. Eggs are deposited on a floating leaf. The leaf is removed to transfer eggs in a small container for hatching in 1day.
A filter less 2 gal tank with RO water and thin layer of peat moss was used for grow out. It was initially seeded with paramecium. But when fry were observed eating a baby brine shrimp at 5 days post spawn, bbs were used as the main food.
