ALERT: Iceland’s most dangerous volcano is waking up

Описание: A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck Katla this morning beneath 700 meters of ice. Several M3+ quakes followed at shallow depth.

Katla hasn’t erupted in 107 years. That’s twice its typical eruption interval.
In 1918, it triggered floods at 300,000 cubic meters per second, faster than the Amazon River. Icebergs the size of buildings were thrown miles across the plains. A 1,700-meter-long ice canyon was carved in hours.

A major eruption today would send ash across Europe and halt transatlantic flights. Scientists estimate only hours of warning.
