HIV testing services (HTS) at the Equality Unit

The Equality Unit (EU), as part of the Centre for Student Counselling and Development at Stellenbosch University (SU), serves as the unit dealing directly with:
• Complaints of unfair discrimination, victimisation, sexual harassment and harassment; and
• A comprehensive HIV response which includes sexualities and gender as foci.

The EU promotes collective action towards social justice and discourse regarding social asymmetries at SU grounded in the understanding that in order to achieve greater societal equality we should use a process of equity to achieve this outcome. The Equality Unit coordinates, educates and raises awareness around sexualities, gender, HIV/Aids, and anti-discrimination in partnership with relevant campus structures.

All the actions of the EU are guided by the SU Policy on Unfair Discrimination and Harassment and the SU HIV/Aids Policy. The Equality Unit provides services to all staff, students and other stakeholders of the University whilst on property under the University’s jurisdiction or whilst engaged in any University-related activities.

The EU consists of two overarching inter-linked portfolios. These are: the HIV, gender & sexualities portfolio and the anti-discrimination portfolio. The link between these portfolios is coordinated and supported through a Communication and Research structure in recognising the intersectional nature of the functions of the unit.
