ARCUS carbon viola bows - and all you want to know about them

Описание: What most viola players don't know, is that the size of a viola (or more precisely, the length of the strings) matters when it comes to choosing the perfect bow.

Bernd Müsing, creator of the ARCUS carbon fiber bow, explains the physics behind this pecularity. He demonstrates how different ARCUS bows (and one wooden bow) sound on violas of different sizes.

Violists are faced with the decision which size fo viola they should choose. Every size has its advantages and disadvantages: While the smaller viola seems to be more easy to play, it's more easy to hold and more comfortable to play with - but the downside is that its sound can me a little bit more squeeky and more "alto" than the prefered "tenor". A bigger viola will deliver a warmer, deeper sound and be easier on the strings. But it's less comfortable to hold.

But what does that have to do with the viola bow?
It's important to know that the string length of a viola (and therefore the size) is related to the selection of bows. Depending on their length, the strings have a different tension (when tuned to the same note) and a different amplitude (when swinging to right and left). That requires an appropriate bow that provides the matching "downforce".

The ARCUS viola bow series are adapted accordingly: While the stick resilience of the M series matches the tension of the strings of a smaller viola, the P series matches a bigger viola.
