North Korean provocations and tensions in the Taiwan Strait, East China Sea, and South China Sea pose significant challenges to the Indo-Pacific security order. At the same time, the United States has made significant strides in building a more integrated security architecture over the last year, deepening cooperation with Japan, Australia, the Republic of Korea, and, most recently, the Philippines. What is the outlook for security in the Indo-Pacific in the coming months? What new initiatives can we expect from the United States?
Ahead of Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin’s trip to the Indo-Pacific, the CSIS Asia program convened an informal arm chair conversation with Dr. Ely Ratner, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs, and Dr. Siddharth Mohandas, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for East Asia.
