Six world-changing events. Fifty years. One chain reaction.
And almost no one alive today knows they were all connected.
Most people learn about the fall of Constantinople, Gutenberg's
printing press, Columbus, and the Renaissance as separate chapters
in separate classes. They weren't separate. They were dominoes.
When Ottoman cannons brought down Constantinople's walls in 1453,
Greek scholars fled west carrying manuscripts that hadn't been read
in centuries — and dumped them directly into a Florence hungry for
new ideas. At the same time, a goldsmith in Germany invented a
machine that made it impossible to suppress those ideas. The Church,
which had controlled human thought for a thousand years, suddenly
faced something it had no weapon against: cheap books in the hands
of ordinary people.
Then Spain — desperate for trade routes that didn't cross Ottoman
territory — funded a stubborn Genoese sailor to sail west. He never
found Asia. He found something far more consequential.
In this video we trace the full chain — from the cannon fire at
Constantinople to the New World, through Gutenberg, the Medici,
da Vinci, and the end of medieval civilisation.
If this connected history in a way school never did — subscribe.
