Mark Johnson discusses the founding of his firm, CIVITAS, and his focus on projects that provide benefits to the public at large, and not just investors. He discusses his creative management style, how everyone benefits from a collaborative approach to problem-solving. Specifically, Johnson describes the ongoing LA River Revitalization Project, which aims to reshape how the city looks and functions around the urban waterway. He is collaborating on the initiative with architect Frank Gehry to try to make this a valuable public space for the city.
Mark Johnson is a landscape architect and urban designer with a lengthy portfolio of the park, public space, and urban regeneration projects. As a founder of the firm CIVITAS based in Denver, US, he has led projects of all scales and types across the US, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Notable projects include the redevelopment of the Stapleton Airport in Denver, The Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan, Museum Park Miami, and the San Diego North Embarcadero. Mark is known for large-scale projects that engage social, economic, and environmental systems. His work has emphasized the reuse of brownfield and underutilized sites, combining the redesign of infrastructure, transportation, land use, open space, and environmental systems to transform entire districts of cities.

reSITE is an international platform connecting people and ideas to improve the urban environment. We work at the intersection of architecture, urbanism, politics, culture, and economics.
We feature thought leaders whose work pushes the boundaries on how we build, design, regenerate and create life in cities, and frame them through many lenses, convening them in one place. We act as a catalyst for social action and innovative leadership. We encourage an exchange of ideas about making cities more livable, competitive, and resilient. We protect and promote public space, architecture, and sustainable development in cities.
All to make our cities more livable, competitive, resilient, inclusive, mobile, and designed with humans in mind.
