Hell–Volhard–Zelinsky (HVZ) Reaction :
Hell–Volhard–Zelinsky reaction is an important organic name reaction used to introduce a halogen (Cl or Br) at the α-position of carboxylic acids having at least one α-hydrogen.
In this reaction, carboxylic acid is treated with halogen (Br₂ or Cl₂) in presence of red phosphorus (P) to form α-halo carboxylic acid.
General Reaction:
Example:
Use:
This reaction is used for the preparation of α-bromo or α-chloro carboxylic acids, which are important intermediates in organic synthesis.
