I always tell everybody that filming furry animals is the most difficult discipline. First of all, they are usually nocturnal creatures, so the time to film them is very limited. I have to catch them either in the evening, when they come out of their daytime hiding places, or in the early morning, when they return to their shelter after a sleepless night. In both cases, the camera often curses the lack of light. Secondly, and above all, mammals move through the landscape quite randomly, and one often sits in a spot for several days without spotting anything.

I was lucky as hell when filming this roebuck. Ignoring the preparatory phase, when I drove around various locations looking for a photogenic spot (meaning a blooming meadow), the filming was basically finished in half an hour. I hid myself by a bale of hay, pointed the lens at a nice piece of meadow, the deer appeared in it in a few minutes and the shot was done. The fact that I sat in the same spot for three more mornings (roughly 12 hours in total), during which I failed to shoot anything at all, will be tactfully left to fade into oblivion. In particular, we won't mention all those foxes that ran around the surrounding fields every day at dawn, but I didn't manage to get them in the frame.
