(21 Feb 2017) A bomb exploded January 21st 2017 in a market in a northwest tribal region that borders Afghanistan, killing 20 people and wounding at least 50, officials said.
Dr. Sabir Hussain at the main hospital in Parachinar, the capital of Pakistan's Kurram tribal region, said two wounded victims died during treatment, raising the death toll to 20.
Initially, seven people were brought dead from the vegetable market blast site and more than 60 wounded.
Eleven of the critically wounded died earlier while being treated.
Hussain said several of the wounded were in serious condition and being transferred to other hospitals for better care.
Shahid Khan, an assistant tribal administrator, said the explosion took place when the market was crowded with retailers buying fruits and vegetables from a wholesale shop.
He said the attack was being investigated.
Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a banned sectarian militant group that has attacked minority Shiites Muslims in the past, claimed responsibility for the attack.
The bombing took place in a predominantly Shiite area of Kurram.

Two suicide bombings in northwestern Pakistan killed at least six people on February 15th following an almost three-month-long lull in the volatile region.
In the latest attack a suicide bomber struck a vehicle carrying local judges and judicial officials in the northwestern city of Peshawar.
Peshawar's police chief said a driver was killed and several others were wounded in that explosion, he added that 15 kilograms of explosives were used in the attack.
Earlier on February 15th a Taliban suicide bombing targeted the administrative headquarters of a tribal region in northwestern Pakistan, killing three policemen and two passers-by, according to officials.
The headquaters are located 45 kilometres (28 miles) outside Peshawar.
Pakistan has waged several offensives against militants in recent years, including a major operation that started in mid-2014 in the last key insurgent sanctuary of North Waziristan.

An Islamic State group (IS) suicide bomber struck inside a famed shrine in southern Pakistan on February 16th, killing at least 75 people in the deadliest attack in the country in more than two years.
The bomber entered the main hall of the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sehwan and detonated the device amid dozens of worshippers, according to three security officials, who said at least 20 women and nine children were among the dead.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to brief reporters.
Fazal Palejo, a senior health official in Sindh province, confirmed the toll.
IS claimed the attack in a statement circulated by its Aamaq news agency, saying it had targeted a "Shiite gathering."
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has vowed that security forces will track down the perpetrators of the attack, according to Pakistani state TV.

The custodian of a famed shrine in southern Pakistan which was struck by a suicide bomber on February 16th killing at least 75 people, said worshippers would not be deterred by such "cowardly acts".
Speaking at the shrine after the attack, Dr Syed Mehdi Reza Shah, whose family is responsible for the Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sehwan, labelled the killers "cowards" and said it would "strengthen" the resolve of devotees to worship as normal.
Tears streamed down Shah's face as he joined other worshippers in watching a dhol, a traditional drum, being played.
