Voyanov gardens (Vojanovy sady), U Lužického semináře, Malá Strana
Being on the Lesser Strana near the Wallenstein Palace and Charles Bridge, pay attention to the arch in the gray wall from the U Lužického semináře street. Behind the wall is the oldest park in Prague - Vojanovy sady.
These gardens have existed since the middle of the XIII century - then they belonged to the episcopal residence. In 1419 they were burned by the Hussites. The scorched territory was gradually built up with residential buildings, among them was the Wallenstein house. Beautiful gardens have disappeared without a trace.
The restoration of the park was facilitated by Ferdinand III, in the second half of the 17th century.
In the next two centuries, the gardens belonged to the convent, then transferred to the women's educational institution.
In 1920, part of the garden was transferred to the Ministry of Finance. A new building was built for the ministry. The park has been open to the public since 1954. The park complex received a new name - it was called the Vojan Gardens, in honor of the actor of the Prague Theater - Eduard Vojan.
Voyanovy Sady is a classic English-style park - cozy and not crowded. The area of the complex is 2.5 hectares. Apple trees bloom in it, roses are fragrant. Carps are splashing in the pond; along the paths, not embarrassed by the walking public, peacocks gracefully walk.
In the park stands the chapel of St. Elias (Elijah) is an early Baroque building, made in the form of a grotto. Inside the chapel is a statue of St. Joseph by Matousz Jakl.
In the northern part of the complex is the baroque chapel of St. Teresa of Avilla with beautiful ceiling paintings.
On the stone stairs, which is located on the south side of the park, you can go to the palace of the Ministry of Finance.
Interesting is the unique sundial placed on the wall of the monastery wing and decorated with the image of St. Theresa. The watch was made in the 17th century.
The park suffered a flood in 2002. The Vltava hid it under four-meter waves.
The Vojanovo Gardens are open to the public all year round from 08:00 to 17:00. Free admission.
