French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the newly announced U.S. tariffs as “brutal, unfounded, and economically harmful for all.” Speaking at a high-level meeting with industry leaders and EU Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, Macron warned that Trump’s calculations “don’t fix trade imbalances” and risk weakening the global economy—including the United States itself. He called for a coordinated, two-phase European response and urged French and EU businesses not to rush into bilateral deals or concessions.
