Technics SA-1010 Final Monster, 1983, 120WPC. End of the line for an era for Technics.
Here’s the last 120WPC receiver that I can find from Technics in 1983. Discrete outputs, no STK pack here.
Other manufacturers had similar receivers up through the early 80s with more than 120 watts per channel output, but I think this is the truly end of the line for a Panasonic (Technics). Pioneer and Sansui also had a couple stragglers like this and I’ve got those in my collection as well.
Really nice unit. This is a similar footprint to the Technics SA-828 from 1981 which I posted two weeks ago.
Main transformer is huge and encapsulated in a nice metal case. Amp has a very sophisticated computer circuitry, which is monitoring the sound and making bias adjustments on the fly based on temperature and sound quality. To the average person, I think most receivers are doing this automatically, but this one calls it out. It’s very geeky, but I quite enjoy seeing it’s doing.
As such, when you turn it on, there’s a whole series of lights that explain what the amp is doing, all these preheat checks, and then it turns on.
Features a stereo expansion circuit and an analog tuner representation dial. Multiple inputs and quite a few features.
Anyone else have one of these?
