In this episode of the Sims Crane Minute, Safety Director Bob Berry reminds us of some important tips for avoiding electrocution when a crane has made contact with an energized power line. We will also demonstrate the difference between touch and step potential.

Contact with energized utilities creates an immediate work hazard. When this happens, it is important to stop work and clear the area. Most importantly, never attempt to approach the equipment until a qualified emergency response team has verified the area is safe.

Nobody wants to see their co-worker killed on the job; however, it is extremely important to remember NOT to run to the aid of workers injured or killed when cranes or other equipment make contact with power.

Approaching the electrocuted victims often results in a multiple casualty situation as workers enter the electrified zones of potential energy around the crane.
