Here’s a recent geoarchaeological study looking at the extent of the canal project. For a long time there was discussion on whether the canal was actually completed. This survey’s findings support the idea that the project ended prematurely.

Projections of the two maps are slightly different, and as such the borders of Francia are a tiny bit off. Vitold Muratov’s photo of the trenchwork was also found on Wikimedia Commons.
