The following is a performance of
CARLOS CHAVEZ
SINFONIA INDIA
as performed by the
UCLA SYMPHONY
under the baton of conductor Neal Stulberg
at Royce Hall, UCLA in Los Angeles CA
on May 13, 2022
CARLOS CHAVEZ
SINFONIA INDIA
was originally composed for
indigenous percussion instruments of Mesoamercia and Mexico,
and while most orchestras use the substitute instruments
that Chavez recommended there are a few conductors looking
for the indigenous instruments it was originally composed and
orchestrated for and have been able to find modern day
practitioners who own, play and compose for the instruments,
in traditional and contemporary settings.
of which Christopher Garcia is one
He was asked to provide the instruments along with technical
instructions on how to have the instruments respond as they
do not respond the way traditional western percussion instruments do
e.,g., snare drum, tenor drum, concert bass trum
He has been working with orchestras and chamber groups since 2005
and composing music for the indigenous breath, string and percussion
instruments in traditional and contemporary settings in the United States
and abroad
