Almost 13mins of quickfire train action at Hammersmith station. This video features 6 London Underground District line trains (4x S7 Stock and 2x D78 Stock) and 12 London Underground Piccadilly line 1973 Stock trains for a grand total of 18 trains.
The District and Piccadilly lines run parallel with each other from South Kensington to Ealing Common. Similar to the Metropolitan and Jubilee lines between Wembley Park and Finchley Road, the Piccadilly line does not stop at all the stations in between Hammersmith and Acton Town skipping out Ravenscourt Park, Turnham Green (except for early morning or late at night), Stamford Brook and Chiswick Park which are all served by the District line. The Piccadilly line then continues up north to Uxbridge, running parallel with the Metropolitan line from Rayners Lane, while the District line goes just one stop further to terminate at Ealing Broadway (which is set to become part of the Crossrail route in 2018).
In the future, the Piccadilly Line is one of four selected tube lines to be given a big upgrade. This project has been dubbed "The New Tube for London" and it involves replacing the current trains with brand new trains on the Bakerloo, Central, Piccadilly and Waterloo & City Line services. The aim is to improve customer service which will mean higher operating speeds for faster journeys, higher frequency for reduced waiting time and improvements in efficiency, reliability, safety and capacity. The early concepts estimate that the new trains will increase capacity on the Piccadilly Line alone by approximately 60% but in order to improve safety and reliability, the four lines will see the installation of Platform Edge Door (PED) technology which is currently in use on the Jubilee Line from Westminster to North Greenwich.
