Dutch Schultz’s 350-pound bodyguard ATTACKED Bumpy Johnson — 5 seconds later, he was CRUSHED
Harlem, 1934. 7:45 p.m. Lenox Avenue. Word spread fast in the numbers world: Dutch Schultz had just had one of St. Clair's bankers beaten down at the corner of 135th Street and sent a clear message along with it: “Bumpy Johnson. Germania Club. 9 p.m.” It wasn't an invitation. It was an order. Schultz knew three things that would force Bumpy to show up. First, the beaten banker was one of Bumpy's most loyal men—failing to respond would mean losing face across all of Harlem. Second, St. Clair wouldn't allow Dutch to push deeper into her territory, and the message was aimed directly at Bumpy, the only one with enough weight to go in her place.
Third, Schultz deliberately chose the Germania Club at 173 East 3rd Street, Manhattan, a place under his full control—to prove that if Bumpy wanted to protect Harlem, he had to step right into the heart of his enemy's domain. Bumpy left Harlem without an escort. Not because he trusted Schultz, but because he understood this was a meeting where any show of force could be interpreted by Schultz as a declaration of war. Schultz had calculated exactly that.
