The vessel is hired for one voyage to transport a certain batch of cargo. For the performance of commercial work, the shipowner receives a stipulated monetary reward - freight. Freight payment can be made in the form of lumpsum (for the entire vessel), but more often a form of payment is used proportional to the amount of cargo, i.e. for each ton transported. Ship freight rates depend on many factors: the general state of the market (the balance of supply and demand), capital and operating costs of the vessel, the cost of loading and unloading, port fees, fuel consumption and current prices for fuel, oil, etc.

A time charter is considered as a contract for the lease of a vessel for a certain time with the provision of the right to its technical operation and crew services, which are provided like a contract. A time charter contains a more detailed description of the vessel than a voyage charter, since the expected income and expenses of the charterer depend on the characteristics of the vessel. The duration of the contract varies from several months to several years.

The transfer of a vessel to a bareboat charter implies ownership and full control of the vessel by the charterer. The shipowner receives a rent for the vessel regardless of the commercial results of the charterer's activities. The vessel is in full possession of the charterer, but it must be maintained in accordance with the rules of technical operation. The owner has the right to control the condition of the vessel and the conditions of its operation. There are two options for exiting the bareboat charter: the return of the vessel to the owner or the purchase of the vessel by the charterer.
