Construction started on the facility in 1943. It was originally a Navy Hospital before being converted to a Veterans Administration Hospital.
The center was founded in 1948. It's named after Milledgeville native Carl Vinson who was the longest serving member of Congress from Georgia. He's known as the, "Father Of The Two Ocean Navy" and helped shape the U.S. Military through much of the 20th Century.
