What is Epiglottitis? Epiglottitis is a potentially life-threatening condition characterized by inflammation and swelling of the epiglottis, which is a small cartilaginous structure located at the base of the tongue that plays a crucial role in the process of swallowing and breathing. The epiglottis is positioned just above the larynx and behind the base of the tongue. Its primary role is to act as a dynamic valve, redirecting food and liquids away from the trachea (windpipe) and towards the esophagus during swallowing. This seemingly simple action is vital for preventing aspiration, where food or drink enters the lungs, potentially causing serious respiratory complications. When epiglottitis occurs, the inflammation isn't limited to just the epiglottis itself. The surrounding tissues, including the base of the tongue, pharynx, and larynx, can also become swollen and inflamed. This widespread swelling in the upper airway can rapidly progress to a medical emergency, as the airway narrows and breathing becomes increasingly difficult and, in extreme cases, it can cause respiratory failure.
