About the Conference
“He who pays the piper calls the tune,” economist Benjamin A. Rogge warned of this dynamic in 1957—a connection that remains central to today’s conversation on economic concentration and the marketplace of ideas. This year's conference explored whether the increased market concentration we have witnessed in recent decades negatively impacts our marketplace of ideas—across academia, journalism, and the broader production and diffusion of information—and what can be done about it.

Discussions started by covering the market for news production and consumption, where the digital platforms and media empires owned by billionaires play an increasingly important role in shaping our public square. It then moved to explore whether market concentration can create pernicious biases on the incentives to produce and diffuse expert knowledge—with a focus on academia and law and economics more broadly. It concluded by exploring how economic concentration is influencing the world of think tanks, politics, and policymaking.
