Dr. Stuart Harman, Investigator at the CHEO Research Institute, shares findings from a randomized clinical trial and follow-up study that examined the recovery for kids diagnosed with pneumonia after taking 5 days of high-dose amoxicillin (antibiotics) versus 10 days of high-dose amoxicillin. The study, which took place in emergency departments at CHEO and McMaster Children’s Hospital, discovered that the kids who only took 5 days of amoxicillin and 5 days of a placebo recovered just as well as those who took a full 10 days of amoxicillin. This means that doctors should consider recommending 5 days of antibiotics instead of 10 days of antibiotics to treat uncomplicated pediatric pneumonia.
