STORYLINE:
Tensions ran high on Friday after dozens of Georgians demonstrated against the ongoing presence of Russian troops in the country, in front of a makeshift Russian army base in the village of Chkhorotsku, near the town of Senaki.
Protesters waved Georgian flags and later burned a banner bearing the image of Russian revolutionary Vladimir Lennin, as they demanded that the Russian troops go home.
"We want only one thing, it is freedom, Georgian people always fight for freedom," said one woman.
"It's a shameful ambition to conquer their neighbour. A small country and we condemn it and we will never surrender, we will never give up," said another.
Tensions remain after Georgian forces launched an attack on South Ossetia's capital, Tskhinvali, on August 7 only to be quickly driven out by superior Russian firepower.
Both sides agreed to a ceasefire brokered by France, but Moscow further fuelled tensions by claiming that the deal allowed them to occupy "security zones."
In a move denounced in Georgia and abroad, Russia's parliament recognised the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent on Tuesday.
The regions make up roughly 20 percent of Georgia's territory - and include miles (kilometres) of prime coastline along the Black Sea.
France has warned that the European Union is considering sanctions against Russia for its conduct in the Caucasus.
A Georgian official has also claimed that Russian forces have been involved in ethnic cleansing.
On the outskirts of the city of Gori, which suffered the brunt of Russia's air strikes, makeshift camps have been crowded with people seeking shelter.
The United Nations estimates that nearly 160-thousand people have been displaced by the hostilities.
