A January 24, 1988 concert broadcast recording of Earl Wild playing Rubinstein's Piano Concerto No.4 with Hugh Wolff conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
This work was once extremely popular amongst pianists in the 19th and early 20th centuries - such as Josef Hofmann, a pupil of the pianist-composer Anton Rubinstein - played it regularly; however, the work fell somewhat out of favour in the 2nd half of the 20th century, and it was largely Romantic Revival-ist pianists like Earl Wild and Raymond Lewenthal who played it around this time. However, Wild only played the work on two occasions: in Reading on November 1, 1987 and at three Chicago concerts a couple of months later: January 21, 22, and 24 - this broadcast features the last of his three Chicago performances.
As always, Wild plays with his impeccable balance of dazzling dexterity, tremendous power, and refined phrasing, fully aligned with the 19th century approach to individual, inspired, expressive pianism.
Published with agreement with the official Earl Wild channel, which features a host of other superb performances by the great pianist:
