1947 ਦੀ ਵੰਡ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਜਦੋਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਲਹੂ-ਲਹਾਨ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ, ਪਿੰਡ ਬਰਾਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਖੂਹ ਲਾਸ਼ਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਰ ਗਏ। ਲੋਕ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਕ ਮੈਂਬਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਮਰੀਆਂ ਲਾਸ਼ਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖੂਹਾਂ 'ਚ ਸੁੱਟਣ ਲਈ ਮਜਬੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਏ। ਇਹ ਦਿਨ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਦੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਕਾਲੀ ਰਾਤ ਵਾਂਗ ਸਨ।
ਉਹੀ ਸਮਾਂ ਸੀ ਜਦੋਂ ਇਕ ਸਿੱਖ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ, ਗੁਲਾਬ ਸਿੰਘ, ਨੇ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਚੋਂ ਇਕ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਰਾਣਾ ਮਹਿੰਦੀ ਹਸਨ ਨੂੰ ਬਚਾਇਆ। ਆਪਣੀ ਜਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਖਤਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾ ਕੇ, ਉਸਨੂੰ ਨਾ ਸਿਰਫ ਪੰਜਵੀਂ ਜਮਾਤ ਤੱਕ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਇਆ, ਸਗੋਂ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਭੇਜ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਇਹ ਇਨਸਾਨੀਅਤ ਦੀ ਜਿੱਤ ਸੀ।
